From the collaborative process of working with a producer to the challenge of creating a compelling story from raw footage, a successful editor requires a rare combination of artistic talent and technical skill. Continual honing of these skills and interactions with creative people from all over the world are what keeps me engaged in my work.
For over fifteen years, I have worked with the PBS series NATURE as freelance editor. In this time, I have cut footage of some the most talented wildlife cinematographers in the world and edited three one hour shows:
-CHRISTMAS IN YELLOWSTONE: The story of the well-known national park at a time of year when most people never see it.
-WOLVERINE: CHASING THE PHANTOM: An in-depth look at one of the most elusive and largely unknown mammals in the Northern Hemisphere.
-FORTRESS OF THE BEARS: A journey to Alaska’s Admiralty Island, to experience the biggest concentration of bears in the world.
In addition to my long form work, I have also cut many promos, teases and podcasts for the NATURE series. These short form pieces have allowed me to hone my Effects skills and approach storytelling from a different angle.
In addition to my work at Nature, my husband Steve and I started Erie Basin Productions. Under that umbrella, we have created various videos with Steve bringing the animation and graphics design skills and I adding my editing and finishing skills. We take turns at cinematography. Some of our clients include the New York City Regional Economic Development Counsel, Green Generations, and local Red Hook Brooklyn Businesses Fort Defiance and Dry Dock.
To be a successful and sought-after freelance editor in today’s world, one must keep up with rapidly changing technology. Throughout my career, I have focused my learning on new camera formats and edit workflows. I’ve edited pieces for VR Headsets as well as Tik Tok and everything in between. A partial list of my technical skills:
• Editing Platforms - Adobe Premier, AVID, and Final Cut Pro X.
• Experience with camera formats including P2, XDCam, and RED, Insta360R.
• Effects editing - After Effects, Photoshop, and map animation in Google Earth.
Of course, technical skills only go so far. In order to pull in audiences, fully engaging them in the story, a noteworthy editor must be a strong collaborator, able to work with producers of all stripes. It is this fundamental piece of my work that I find most rewarding.
